Ayrshire shop workers' jobs have been saved after collapsed corner shop chain McColl’s was rescued by Morrisons.
The supermarket giant swept in to preserve the bust business, which has stores all over the region, after it plunged into administration last week, putting numerous outlets at risk.
Morrisons have now promised to keep all 1,100 of McColl’s stores open, saving 16,000 jobs.
The company fended off the billionaire owners of Asda to seal the deal.
McColl’s has stores in towns and villages across Ayrshire, including in Ayr, Kilmarnock, Irvine, Kilwinning and Cumnock.
It was revealed last week that the retailer had gone bust and was on the brink of collapse after failing to agree a short-term loan with potential lenders.
Union chiefs have told of their delight that jobs have been saved and are holding talks to help secure the future of staff.
Joanne McGuinness, the national officer for Usdaw, said: “It is great news that Morrisons has been successful in their bid to buy McColl’s out of administration and it will be a huge relief for the staff.
"We are now seeking urgent discussions with Morrisons to help secure the future for the staff.
Morrisons chief executive David Potts said: “Although we are disappointed that the business was put into administration, we believe this is a good outcome for McColl’s and all its stakeholders.
“This transaction offers stability and continuity for the McColl’s business and, in particular, a better outcome for its colleagues and pensioners.
“We all look forward to welcoming many new colleagues into the Morrisons business and to building on the proven strength of the Morrisons Daily format.”
