The lead singer of an Ayrshire indie rock band started the month of February as a new dad — now he hopes to end it with a smash hit.
Keir Mitchell, frontman with The Frontiers, became a father for the first time this month, when bouncing baby boy Albie came into his life.
But he’s got little time to get used to fatherhood, as The Frontiers brace themselves for their new single release next week and a sell out gig to play.
Keir, 24, from Cumnock, said: “It’s been a bit of a crazy month so far but it’s one I’ll certainly remember for a long time.
“I became a father this month to baby Albie Mitchell and he’s doing well, feeding away and putting weight on.
“So with Albie, the new single and the gig in Glasgow, this has all come at once.”
Next Friday The Frontiers head to Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street for the Broadcast Glasgow event, where they’ll support headliners Spangled.
Their new single ‘Life on Stage’ will also be released the same day.
The single has already attracted attention Stateside, with radio stations in Boston and Washington DC giving the band some important airtime.
Keir said: “We’re getting some airplay in the US and from the stats, it’s been played 34 times so far.
“But once the single comes out on the 25th we’ll hopefully get some traction.
“I didn’t realise it had been played that many times in the US, it’s hard enough getting airtime in Scotland, never mind anywhere else.
“But it’s been played on radio stations in Boston and Washington DC, so we’re happy with that.”
The lads are also hoping their new single, which has been aired on the BBC Introducing in Scotland show, can reach a potential audience of millions, as it’s currently being assessed for possible inclusion by the music steaming giants Spotify for their UK indie playlist.
Former Greenmill Primary and Cumnock Academy pupil Keir said: “We applied for the Spotify indie playlist and basically you pitch your song to them.
“Now it’s been whittled down and we’re hoping we’ll get a good chance to get on that playlist.
“If you are into indie music, you click the playlist and we’ll be there, hopefully.
“It’s hard to get onto it but we are down to the last stage and hopefully we can be picked because that would be another kick-on for us.”
The young musicians are frontman Keir Mitchell and guitarist Ross Phillips, both 24, from Cumnock, and Kilmarnock drummer Paul Kelly, 20.
And the trio will be reunited next Friday with their bass guitarist, James Campbell, 21, who put his involvement with The Frontiers on the back burner last year to concentrate on his university studies.
Last year, the band, who list The Jam and The Clash as major musical influences, were fine-tuning their preparations to burst back onto the music scene after a promising few years that saw them headline gigs at King Tut’s and the former O2 ABC in Glasgow.
