Ayrshire Bulls looking to stretch lead at top of Super Series table

After going a point clear at the top of the Super Series Championship table last week, the Ayrshire Bulls will have a chance to stretch their lead tomorrow when they take on the Southern Knights at Millbrae. The former champions will certainly be firm favourites for the match, but Pat MacArthur, their head coach, warned that his side would not take the Knights lightly.

“Southern Knights are fighting for a place in the play-offs and will be desperate for a win after narrowly losing out to Watsonians last week,” he said. “They are a team that has shown improvement week by week and are capable of scoring tries from anywhere. We will look to build on the result from last week and players know the Millbrae crowd will expect nothing less than their best.”

The Knights are in the fourth and final play-off place at present, but are just two points ahead of Stirling Wolves, who have a game in hand. “We discussed matching the Bulls up front and believe we’ve got the pack to be able to do that and cause them issues at set piece time,” said their coach, Alan Tait. “So I know the players are looking forward to the confrontation and battle in the forwards.”

Second-placed Heriot’s travel to Stirling tomorrow. Watsonians, three points behind their Edinburgh rivals in third, make the short journey to Boroughmuir to play the Bulls.

In tomorrow’s Premiership card, Glasgow Hawks face a tough trip to the capital to face a Currie Chieftains side who will be desperate to return to winning ways after last week’s loss at Hawick. Currie had been the only undefeated team in the division before that result at Mansfield Park, but are now a point behind Marr, who visit Edinburgh Accies.

There are two Borders derbies, with Jed-Forest at home to Hawick and Selkirk travelling to Kelso, while Musselburgh welcome Heriot’s Blues to Stoneyhill.
