Ayr United boss relishing battle of the keepers at Somerset Park

Lee Bullen has fired the starting pistol on the race to become United’s number one goalkeeper.

Bullen is relishing the tussle between Aidan McAdams and Charlie Albinson.

Hero Albinson made vital saves – including two spot kicks – as Ayr beat Elgin 4-3 on penalties in the Premier Sports Cup.

But Bullen is expected to mix it up over the next few games before making his No.1 choice.

And the gaffer reckons it’s a terrific headache to have.

Bully said: “We are still experimenting, looking at people, giving everyone opportunities.

“But the goalkeeping position is the one that’s going to cause me a bit of a problem.

“Aidan was outstanding for us last season and Charlie has been brilliant in pre-season, so it’s a good problem to have.

“We want competition for places and that’s why we are trying to balance the squad.

“It means everyone is looking over their shoulders knowing that if they don’t perform then someone is going to take their position. That’s what we need.”

United's next competitive outing will be away to Annan Athletic on Tuesday, July 19 in the Premier Sports Cup.

Meanwhile, Bullen is frustrated by red tape holding up French midfielder David Bangala. He still awaits the nod on an English exam he sat to progress his visa. Bullen admitted: “It’s a nightmare!”

United’s Open Day returns to Somerset between 12-4pm on Saturday. Stadium tours, children’s challenges and meeting players is on the agenda. The hospitality suite will host a coffee morning in aid of Whiteleys Retreat and Ayrshire Cancer Support.
