Ayr International Scotland Cup set to welcome 10,000 spectators to Rozelle this weekend

The longest running grassroots football tournament in the UK is gearing up for its big return in Ayr this weekend.

More than 10,000 players and spectators will pack into Rozelle for the 43rd running of the town’s International Youth Festival as it makes its comeback from Covid cold storage.

The three day competition – worth six figures to the South Ayrshire economy – will see top class action and feature more than 200 teams from across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

And Duncan McIntyre, who helped found the marquee event in 1978, says its popularity is as strong as ever.

He told the Ayrshire Post: “It’s fantastic to be back on the pitch after our enforced two year hiatus.

“The Covid downtime has been tough on everybody and it will be a special moment when that first whistle blows.

“Clubs have stuck with the event and we’ve been bowled over by the entrants once again this year.

“For the first time ever, we have representation from the North East region in the shape of Cove Rangers Youths.

“And a special mention must go to W Academy of Glasgow, who are sending a total of 14 teams to the event across a multitude of age groups.”

The tournament, which welcomed the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Stevie Nicol in their youth, kicks off on Friday with the fun fours competition.

And events run right through to the 11-a-side Scotland Cup finals – to be staged this year at Rozelle instead of Dam Park.

Duncan, 75, added: “We have our usual turnout of local clubs and a very busy weekend for the town is assured.

“As ever we must thank South Ayrshire Council and all those who help make the event possible.

“Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and we can have a return to action to remember.”

Two famous former officials will be honoured at this year’s event as ‘Papa’ Joe McGill and Jofus Lumsden – beloved figures associated with the tournament – will have prizes handed out to referees in their memory.
