An Ayr couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary say the secret to a long-lasting marriage is to always apologise to your spouse.
Judy and Millar Muir married at Newton-on-Ayr Old Church on March 31, 1962 before having a reception in the now demolished Elms Court Hotel on Miller Road.
The couple marked their big day with a special card from The Queen and also proudly showed off their wedding photo, which featured in the Ayrshire Post at the time.
Judy, 81, wore a beautiful long-sleeved gown with a jewelled headpiece and flowing veil, while Millar, 83, looked dapper in a suit with pinstriped trousers.
“The church is no longer there and neither is the reception! It was a beautiful hotel,” said Judy.
The couple went on to honeymoon in Derbyshire which almost got them into a spot of trouble with the police.
Judy said avid train spotter Millar had noticed a train in the distance he wanted to get a photo of.
Having quickly snapped the photo and jumped back into the car to continue their journey, they were stopped by officers searching the area following a diamond heist.
Judy said: “We got a knock on the window from the police who asked us what we were doing, who we were, where we were staying.
“When we got home, my mother said, ‘what were you up to when you were on your honeymoon?’
“She said she had the police round to check we were who we said we were.
“There had been a diamond robbery and they had been checking every suspicious car in the district."
The couple have two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
And retired carpet worker Millar even delivered their second child, daughter Jacqueline, in their old house.
Judy, who worked as a nurse before raising the kids, said: “He would faint at the sight of blood.
“But it was a matter of ‘when you have to, you have to.’
“She was early. But out she popped, we wrapped her up and cut the cord.”
Judy said the secret to a long and happy marriage is to work through any dispute.
She said: “If you have an argument, think about it but apologise and forget about it.
“Whether you’re right or whether you’re wrong – forget about it.
“We’ve had our ups and downs but we’ve been very lucky.”
