Ayr business association says town 'literally falling apart' after shop front signage scare

A town business association has claimed Ayr is “literally falling apart” after shop signage collapsed over the weekend.

Fish Cross Traders Association responded after signage at the shopfront of Home Plus collapsed onto the High Street.

And a town councillor has slammed council chiefs for lacking “civic pride” after yet another building worry hit the main thoroughfare.

The entire shop front of the former Mothercare store crashed to the ground on Saturday night just before 11pm.

Police swooped in and taped off the scene at 149-153 High Street but confirmed on Sunday afternoon that they had no further involvement.

Adam Short, who runs the Fish Cross Traders Association which is formed of Tsukure Hub and zero waste shop, Wasted, told Ayrshire Live: “If a picture could ever sum up Ayr then this would be it.

“The town is literally falling apart.”

Tory councillor Derek McCabe said the owner of the building should ensure it is safe.

The Ayr West councillor told said: “I believe this building is privately owned, but no matter who owns it, there should be a responsibility on the owner's part to maintain the building especially from a health and safety aspect.

"It sums up the current administration in that they do not seem to have any civic pride and have over the past five years shown no real ambition to consider such.

“Their plan for a new leisure centre as the miracle cure to the town is pure fantasy.

"Whereas we see so many small things can be done, one of them being installing a pride back in our centre, this includes the actual buildings in that they are kept in good order and safe.”

South Ayrshire Council has been contacted for comment.
