Manchester United target Axel Disasi has previously suggested Champions League football may determine his next move.
Reports have linked the France international with a potential switch to Old Trafford this summer. Given his omission by Erik ten Hag for most of 2022-23, Harry Maguire is likely to leave - paving the way for a new defender to take his place.
Disasi is valued at around £35million and has been a rare highlight - starting all 38 league games - in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for Monaco. Le Rocher finished sixth in Ligue 1, meaning they will miss out on European football next season.
French outlet L’Equipe claim Man United are close to agreeing a deal for Disasi despite other publications suggesting Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae is the number one target. West Ham United were another Premier League club linked with Disasi but, judging by a previous interview regarding Champions League football, the Red Devils have an ace up their sleeve.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a taste of international recognition, being called up for France’s World Cup squad as a last-minute replacement, but knows that playing in UEFA’s elite competition is crucial to regularly appearing on the biggest stage. And with United having secured their place in next season's Champions League, Disasi's comments will be music to Erik ten Hag's ears.
Disasi said earlier this year: “Thanks to Monaco, I was able to reach the France squad, so I am grateful to the club. For the rest, there will be a reflection that will be done.
“To be called up, you have to play in Europe regularly and be among the best. We are talking about the Champions League of course. I want to taste it, and I want to give myself the means to be there.”
Signing another centre-back would give Erik ten Hag plenty of defensive cover next season. Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Maguire are already on United’s books, with the latter tipped to join Aston Villa.
Injury problems to Varane has likely made Ten Hag prioritise another option ahead of the summer window. Securing a top-four finish has increased Man United’s pulling power as Disasi, a potential long-term signing at 25, can fulfil his Champions League dream at Old Trafford.
