Fans around the world were left devastated in 2018 when news broke that Avicii, a renowned DJ and producer, died while on holiday in Muscat, Oman.

The Swedish DJ and record producer, whose real name was Tim Bergling, died of suicide aged 28.

Avicii first rose to fame in 2011 with his Grammy-nominated single Levels, and he was nominated again in 2012 for his collaboration with David Guetta on their track Sunshine.

As fans continue to pay tribute to the musician today, Avicii’s family and friends opened up about his demise in a new documentary that has landed on Netflix on December 31, titled Avicii: I’m Tim.

The documentary delves into his life, charting how the singer became one of the defining artists of his generation and explores issues the late star was dealing with despite his illustrious career. It also features interviews with his friends, family and team as well as archive footage of home videos from his birth right through to his final days.

His close friend Jesse Waits expressed regret in one part of the documentary, saying: “I don't think anybody really knows why or what happened, nobody really knows what was going through his mind, everybody can speculate.”

The pair had become close after meeting only once. Tim had found success, and while Jesse knew his close pal had problems, including struggles with anxiety and a series of health issues, he hadn't realised the full extent of how deep they ran.

Jesse added: "He seemed good to everybody I talked to that was around him, he was in a good place. It's hard to accept.

“I know this is something that is inevitable, but if I was there, I could have fixed it.

"Whatever he was going through, I'd been like, 'F***ing shut the f*** up, f***ing put your shoes on, and let's go out f***ing outside for a walk’. I'm sure everybody feels that they could have changed something, especially his family."

Avicii has been credited as one of the main DJs who created a strong legacy in the musical world.

His tragic death came two years after he announced his retirement from touring in March 2016.
