Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner has revealed he broke more than 30 bones during a snow plough accident.

The star, known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was accidentally run over by his own six-tonne machine on New Year’s Day. The accident took place near the Mount Rose highway, which straddles the Nevada-California border.

On Saturday, he shared a photo on Instagram of him receiving treatment in hospital and thanked fans for their support.

Jeremy, 52, wrote: “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …

“Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.

“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I. Much love and appreciation to you all.

“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.”

Local police said that the actor was helping a family member free a car from heavy snow, when he was accidentally run over by his own ploughing machine.

He was then airlifted to hospital after suffering “blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries”.

Renner was in a critical condition following the accident and has had two operations in which surgeons in Reno, Nevada, inserted metal pins around his damaged leg.

He used the snow plough, which has wide tracks, to help a family member with a vehicle stuck in the snow near his home by Lake Tahoe.

Local sheriff Darin Balaam said that when he got out of the snow plough to speak to the family member the vehicle “was starting to roll”.

Renner tried to get back in it and was run over. He lost a lot of blood and neighbours gave him first aid until he was airlifted to hospital.
