Auto drivers in Chennai reject Rs 40 base fare proposal

CHENNAI: Get ready to be fleeced further by autorickshaw drivers as they have rejected a state interdepartmental committee’s recommendation to increase the base fare from Rs 25 to Rs 40 for the first 1.8km. The committee report recently submitted to the government for approval said after the base fare, passengers have to pay Rs 18 for every kilometre, up from Rs 12 per kilometre.

While the proposed fares are 40% more than the existing official fares fixed nine years ago, autorickshaw drivers in Chennai have been charging a minimum fare of Rs 50.
