Gone are the days of an appliance for an appliance’s sake. Today, younger Australians are taking more of an interest in not only the functionality of an appliance, but also its aesthetics and status.
According to the new Australians@Home report by Samsung1 looks aren’t everything though, and the cost-of-living crunch has us all in a firm grip. Enter – an increasing demand for smart, high-value appliances. Intelligent connectivity and customisation of devices are providing tech-savvy and eco-conscious Australians with meaningful and valuable products they want and need in their homes.
We take a look into what makes smart appliances a home must-have.
A preference for personalisation
Just as Instagram and TikTok is full of flashy, pristine homes and kitchens kitted out with all the latest and greatest appliances, Australians also want to show off their homes. Smart appliances are about personalisation and having your home, your way.
Features like voice-activated controls, automatic lighting, and smart thermostats can give you total control over your home devices. Such features have proven popular with consumers, as one quarter of Australians and over a third of Gen Z say they’re more likely to invite people over if they have a fancy fridge, such as a Samsung AI Family Hub French Door Refrigerator.2
The AI Family hub French Door Refrigerator not only allows you to sync your smartphone to the screen to post videos and photos, connect to Spotify, watch TV and plan your weekly meals2, but it’s AI Vision3 Inside feature can also help you to keep track of what’s going in and out of the fridge, as well as connect seamlessly to the Samsung Food app to draw dinner inspiration via the SmartThings app, you could also check what ingredients are missing, or about to expire, all from the palm of your hand. Like having your very own kitchen assistant? It doesn’t get more personal than that.
Appliances you’ll want to show off
A stylish home environment is also becoming a key factor in wanting to bring people into the home and create core memories amongst friends and family.4 With the rising desire for stylish appliances also comes a growing need for practicality, as cost-of-living pressures continue to dominate Australian households. Where aesthetics meets convenience, Samsung data shows younger Australians are seeking sleek appliances that also make everyday life easier.
Samsung’s SmartThings app bridges the gap between aesthetics and practicality by seamlessly connecting users to their appliances and allowing appliances to interact with each other.
A personalisation standout is the Routines function of the Samsung SmartThings app, which can help you organise your life and get more out of your day. Users can set a “Bedtime” routine, for example; the Smart TV turns off at a chosen time and speakers play calming music to signify that it’s time for the family to get ready for bed. Pretty cool.
Practicality and efficiency, with style
The Samsung report also found that over half say high energy consumption is their number one appliance related frustration5 so smart appliances such as washers and dryers are popular as they can help optimise energy usage6. They offer real-time monitoring via SmartThings Energy to help reduce unnecessary energy output, offering a smart, efficient choice for those looking to maximise potential savings on energy costs while maintaining a stylish and efficient home7.
Another great feature of the Samsung SmartThings app is that you can monitor the energy consumption of all your connected SmartThings compatible appliances – fridge, washing machine, air-conditioning, vacuum etc. – individually8. When every dollar counts, it’s handy to be able to monitor energy usage at such a micro level. You can even set your appliances individual energy goals to meet over time.
The Samsung Bespoke Jet Plus Complete stick vacuum cleaner is another piece of tech that can make life easier, but also looks great. It’s cordless, but has an up to two-hour run time, which means you can manage a whole house in one go9. Best of all, the motor has a 10-year limited parts warranty10. “These days, having a quality product that lasts is one of the greatest deciding factors when making a purchase. That, and – let’s be honest – the aesthetics,” says editor-in-chief, Elle Lovelock.
A rising appetite for AI
Younger demographics are enticed by the modern convenience of enhanced user experience. Smart appliances use AI to learn user behaviours, offer personalised recommendations, understand commands, connect to virtual assistants like Google and Alexa and detect fault.
When linked to part of an ecosystem, appliance intelligence allows not only younger but all users to take control of what matters most to them, such as energy management and food waste reduction, creating more time in the day to get on with the things they love doing.
Controlling your SmartThings compatible washing machine, vacuum, and even restocking the refrigerator from a handheld device – while you’re out and about – is no longer a thing of the past.
