Aussie merino wool is helping to deliver a sustainable spring in the step of European runners as part of a recyclable and biodegradable sneaker.
The running shoe is the result of a partnership between Australian Wool Innovation's Woolmark Company and French brand Circle Sportswear.
Australian Wool Innovation chief executive John Roberts said using wool in running shoes wasn't new, but producing a biodegradable sole was a fresh innovation.
"It's always been a bit of an issue, where I've got a biodegradable upper but I've still got plenty of rubber, and nylon laces," he said.
"It completes that sustainable shoe."
The wool boss said the shoe will help boost the environmental and technological credentials of Australian producers.
"We have pioneered the use of wool across the world, collaborating with leading brands on material development, functionality and aesthetics to constantly innovate," Mr Roberts said.
The footwear is one of the first fully eco-designed running shoes made in Europe.
The mid-sole is created from castor oil and is designed for flexibility, while the outer sole is made of a natural vulcanised rubber.
The upper section is fully biodegradable and the manufacturer says the sole can be fully recycled via mechanical processes without losing its technical properties.
Circle chief executive Romain Trebuil said the company worked with biomechanical experts who analysed more than one million strides to ensure the performance and comfort of the shoes.
Mr Roberts said the product demonstrated wools' versatility and met consumer demand for sustainable products.
