The Australian share market has lost ground as Donald Trump expanded his trade war by announcing steep new tariffs on copper - although goldminers suffered the most in trading.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index on Wednesday finished 52.1 points lower at 8,538.6, a loss of 0.61 per cent, while the broader All Ordinaries fell 50.9 points, or 0.58 per cent, to 8,777.8.
