Emma Raducanu booked her place in the second round of the Australian Open with an impressive 6-0 2-6 6-1 win over Sloane Stephens.
It was a match between two Grand Slam champions that saw huge momentum shifts, but it was the British star who came out on top in just her third Slam and her first ever appearance at the tournament.
“It was a tough match-up for a first round,” said Raducanu.
“I knew there would some long rallies because her athleticism is right up there. I had to work extremely hard for those points. Coming out for the first set, I played very good tennis, but of course there was always going to be some adversity. I’m happy to have regrouped in the third set.”
Next up for Raducanu is a match against Danka Kovinic, the 27-year-old who came through Jang Su-jeong in three sets. The Brit will be a heavy favourite for the clash, and victory would set up a potential third-round match against her idol Simona Halep.
When is Emma Raducanu vs Danka Kovinic?
Raducanu will face Kovinic on Thursday, January 20.
The match is scheduled to start the night session on Margaret Court Arena, so the players should take to the court at about 08:00am GMT.
