Australian man James O'Flaherty among 10 killed in Ireland service station blast

An Australian national is among 10 people killed in a blast at a petrol station in Ireland.

Police said the explosion happened shortly after 3pm on Friday local time at an Applegreen service station in the village of Creeslough, in the north-western Irish county of Donegal.

James O'Flaherty, 48, from Sydney, died in the blast that levelled the service station's building, damaged an adjacent apartment building and shattered the windows of nearby cottages.

Ireland's police force, An Garda Síochána, released the names and photos of all 10 people killed.

The youngest victim is aged five years old and the oldest 59.

Mr O'Flaherty, who lived in Rinclevan, Dunfanaghy, will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Eight people were hospitalised following the explosion — one flown to Dublin in critical condition — in the community of about 400 people near Ireland's rugged Atlantic coast.

Ten people were killed in the petrol station explosion.

Police are investigating the cause of the blast.

Superintendent David Kelly said evidence "is pointing toward a tragic accident".

An Garda Síochána said police will continue to examine the scene over the coming days and the area will remain cordoned off to the public.

'A tsunami of grief'

Irish police superintendent Liam Geraghty said locals were traumatised by the event.

"It was a very, very traumatic scene that people came across," he said.

"It was a very, very confusing, as you can imagine. And there was a lot of debris."

Eyewitness Siobhan Carr said the area was covered in ash and a "puff of smoke".

"And just within seconds, people from the community had just come running up the roads," she said.

"Cars stopped, people getting out of cars running towards the building to see who could help."

Local priest, Father John Joe Duffy, said the tragedy was hard to comprehend.

"How do you deal with a tragedy of this enormity? Family members just going in to a shop and suddenly this terrible event takes place, this terrible accident," he said.

"And it's just like a tsunami of grief that has hit us all and hit this community."

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said the accident has impacted the whole of Ireland.

"The entire nation is mourning and really shocked and deeply saddened," he said.

"The young child in the shop loses her life and two teenagers, along with men and women who are going about their lives as well."
