Australian Field Hockey Player Amputates Finger To Compete In Olympics

Puma launches a new brand campaign with Olympic athletes

In the lead-up to the Paris Olympics, athletes have been intensifying their training to stay ahead of their competitors. One such athlete, Australian field hockey player Matt Dawson, made a unique decision to enhance his performance for the Games. Dawson, aged 30, faced a challenging situation when he injured his ring finger in a practice match just two weeks before his scheduled appearance at the Olympics.

The injury occurred when Dawson was struck by a hockey stick, causing severe damage to the top of his finger. The severity of the injury put his Olympic participation in jeopardy, prompting swift action to address the situation. Recognizing the gravity of the injury, Dawson and his team sought immediate medical attention, leading to the decision to amputate part of his finger to ensure his ability to compete.

Reflecting on the incident, Dawson shared, 'It was pretty significant, the injury to the finger. When people around you – when they see it and don’t say anything – you obviously know, it’s pretty bad.' The urgency of the situation was evident as medical professionals quickly recommended consulting a plastic surgeon to address the injury effectively.

Despite the setback, Dawson remained determined to pursue his Olympic aspirations and underwent the amputation procedure to secure his spot on the Australian men’s hockey team, known as the Kookaburras. His resilience and commitment to his sport were evident as he overcame this obstacle to continue representing his country on the international stage.

As the Paris Olympics commenced, the Australian men’s hockey team has already achieved success by defeating Ireland in a thrilling match. The team is now gearing up to face Belgium in their upcoming fixture, showcasing their competitive spirit and dedication to performing at the highest level.
