Australian cycling ace in horror training crash

Australian cycling ace Michael Matthews has broken both wrists in a training crash and been ruled out of racing for the forseeable future.

Matthews' season on the World Tour started with victory in the Gran Premio de Castellon in Spain in late January - the 44th win of his decorated 17-year career.

The 35-year was to have contested the eight-day Paris-Nice race starting Sunday but now faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

"Unfortunately Michael Matthews suffered a crash whilst out training (on Thursday) and was transferred to hospital," a statement from his Jayco Alula team said.

"Team medical staff have confirmed that CT scan results show fractures to both of his wrists, subsequently ruling him out of all upcoming races.

"Matthews is in direct contact with team medical staff and will have extensive support to aid a swift recovery."

The injury ruins the European spring campaign for Matthews, who has won stages of all three Grand Tours, and the green jersey at the fabled Tour de France.

The Canberra-born Matthews endured a rugged 2025 campaign when he had to recover from a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism discovered at an altitude training camp in Livigno, Italy.
