On a rain interrupted first day, Australia reached 187-3 at the close, having been inserted. With the grassy pitch looking to favour seam bowlers, as recent Melbourne tracks have, both captains had wanted to bowl first. David Warner, playing his final test, made 38, having been dropped off a simple chance at first slip on 2. Marnus Labuschagne ended the day 44 not out. Australia vs Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground in the Second Test gives the hosts a chance to wrap up the three-match series with a game to spare after Australia won the First Test by 360 runs, Pakistan’s 15th consecutive test defeat in Australia. For the visitors, it was a supine effort. After their pre-series bullish talk of attacking batting, they crawled along at 2.66 runs an over in the first innings, compared to Australia’s 4.29 run rate. In their second knock, Pakistan were skittled for 89. All this by a side that looks stronger in batting than bowling.
Pakistan’s coach Mohammad Hafeez said of the batting that: “We made plans for the team, but unfortunately we couldn't execute them well. The guys wanted to, but they never applied themselves, to be very honest. There were certain situations where we could have dominated."
The positives were the debuts from young bowlers Aamer Jamal and Khurram Shahzad who took the bulk of the wickets between them – unfortunately without much support from the more established members of the attack.
