President Donald Trump has caused another diplomatic headache for Australia after the US announced plans to impose further tariffs.

* The US will impose tariffs of 12.5 per cent on Australian goods, an increase from the current rate of 10 per cent

* The tariffs will come into effect from July 24 for 60 countries, including China, the UK, Japan and New Zealand

* The US says it is increasing the tariffs due to Australia violating anti-slavery provisions

* US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Australia's failure to "impose and effectively enforce a forced-labour import prohibition are unreasonable and burden or restrict US commerce"

* Australian beef and gold products are expected to be exempted

* Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says an ideological disagreement is behind the increase in the tariffs and they are unwarranted

* Trade Minister Don Farrell has also been speaking with Mr Greer while on the sidelines of the OECD meeting in Paris

* The increase from tariffs came after the US Supreme Court in April ruled against the White House imposing the economic measures, citing the Trump administration exceeded its authority
