Australia 's new head coach Andrew McDonald has admitted the prospect of a potential Ashes showdown against the man he replaced would be "great".
McDonald was officially named as Justin Langer 's replacement on Wednesday, signing a four-year deal which will see him take charge across all three formats. His appointment came after Australia enjoyed a successful tour of Pakistan with McDonald in interim charge, winning a Test series in Asia for the first time since 2011.
Langer, meanwhile, dramatically quit as Australia's head coach following a comprehensive 4-0 win over England in the Ashes, rejecting the offer of a short-term contract extension. The 51-year-old cited a lack of support from senior players, support staff and the board as the reason behind his decision in his resignation letter.
And Langer has been heavily linked with the vacant England head coach job, with Chris Silverwood also leaving his role following the Ashes. Recent reports have claimed that Langer is open to the prospect of coaching England, despite previous suggestions he was 'too patriotic' to cross the Ashes divide.
England's interim managing director Sir Andrew Strauss has previously admitted Langer could replace Silverwood, saying: "I know him well. On the surface, he's done a very good job of things with the Australian cricket team. So I wouldn't rule him out, but I'm sure there are plenty of others as well."
And when asked about the prospect of Langer potentially coaching England, McDonald replied: "I think it would be great. If he were to coach England that would be an appointment that would create huge interest. Justin has plenty left to give the game and I look forward to seeing where he ends up."
McDonald also paid tribute to the progress Australia made under Langer, adding: "The journey so far has been particularly pleasing, and I am honoured to be given this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead.
"The success of the World Cup, the Ashes Series and now Pakistan has been testament to the hard work and leadership of Justin, Pat [Cummins] and Aaron [Finch] along with the players and the support staff.
"My plan is to build on the growth, depth and experience of the squad while working collectively with the group and across the game. There are many challenges in the short-term which I know excites the leadership group, the players and the staff. I'd also like to thank my family for their support."
