Australia’s East Coast To Be Hit With Scorching Heat And Catastrophic Fire Danger

Australia’s East Cost To Be Hit With Scorching Heat And Catastrophic Fire Danger

If you live on the East Coast of Australia, buckle up, because extreme weather conditions are coming your way this week. If you’ve been thinking about stocking up on some ice blocks – let this be your sign to add them to your trolley, pronto.

Both Sydney and Brisbane are expected to have the highest November temperatures in years, with temps expected to exceed 35 degrees celsius today and Thursday. So yeah, it’s going to be bloody stinking.

This hot and humid weather is expected to fuel some big thunderstorms  —  we’re talking heavy rain, big hail and damaging winds.

The wind is a major concern for fire authorities, as the gusts are “strong enough to down branches and possibly entire trees which brings the risk of property damage and power outages”, per the ABC.

These strong, dry, westerlie winds also bring with them risks of fast-moving fires, and as such, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has forecast the second-highest fire rating AKA extreme fire danger in 10 districts today, including Greater Sydney.

Lower Central West Plains is predicted to be forecast with a catastrophic fire danger too. Now, just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, there’s also threats of lighting strikes in central parts of NSW. Authorities are concerned that these strikes could start new fires. So it seems like it’s really all happening, huh?

Queenslanders will also experience similar conditions with extreme fire danger expected in the Darling Downs on Thursday.

The centre of Australia has been experiencing scorching heat over the past few days, hitting mid-40s and reaching the hottest November maximum at Longreach and Windorah in 19 years. This heat is getting pushed to the east coast which is why these hot days are happening across Queensland and New South Wales.

The forecast in Sydney is expected to be 12 degrees above the average, making it the city’s warmest November day in five years. Then, once Thursday rolls around, expect those thunderstorm to break.

So this week pack your umbrella, sunscreen and have some ice blocks handy. Trust us, you’ll need them.
