In a move to better protect Australian users of online dating platforms, a new code of conduct has been introduced by the government following concerning research findings. The code aims to address the prevalence of sexual violence experienced by users on these platforms.

Major players in the industry, including Bumble, Grindr, and Match Group Inc., which owns popular platforms like Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and Plenty of Fish, have agreed to adhere to the new code. These platforms, representing 75% of the industry in Australia, have until April 1 to implement the required changes.

The code mandates that platforms must enhance their systems to detect potential incidents of online-enabled harm and take action, including terminating the accounts of offenders. It also requires the implementation of prominent and transparent complaint and reporting mechanisms, along with a new rating system to assess platform compliance.

The government's decision to introduce the code was prompted by research from the Australian Institute of Criminology, which revealed that three out of four users of dating apps or websites had experienced some form of sexual violence through these platforms in the past five years.

Communication Minister Michelle Rowland emphasized the importance of having a robust complaint-handling process and ensuring that banned individuals are blocked across all platforms. The government has warned that if online dating operators fail to prioritize user safety, legislative measures may be taken.

Bumble, one of the platforms that signed up to the code, expressed its commitment to eliminating gender-based violence and creating a safe dating environment. The platform highlighted its focus on women's experiences and safety as core elements of its mission.

While Bumble welcomed the opportunity to collaborate on the code, other platforms like Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Feeld have not yet signed up. The government believes that the code will empower Australians to make informed decisions about choosing dating apps that prioritize user safety.

The implementation of the code marks a significant step towards enhancing safety measures within the online dating industry in Australia, with a strong emphasis on protecting users from potential harm and ensuring a secure dating experience for all.
