Australia based Celtic and Rangers fans demand Sydney Super Cup refunds after Ibrox club pull out

Some Celtic and Rangers fans are demanding refunds after the Ibrox club pulled out of the Sydney Super Cup in November.

Old Firm supporters Down Under had snapped up tickets for the first-ever overseas encounter between the bitter rivals.

Prices for briefs for the derby friendly ranged from $39 to $349 Australian Dollars (£21 to £200) for Premium Packages and were still on sale after Rangers officially announced on Thursday they were withdrawing.

While the reaction in Scotland to the initial announcement was met with an angry backlash with protests involving both sets of fans at the move, there was excitement in Australia with former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou returning home.

It was a rare chance for fans of the big two to see their heroes in action with the game having been due to take place at the 83,5000-capacity Accor Stadium.

Rangers could reportedly face legal action, although the Ibrox club claimed organisers were "unwilling to fulfil their commitments”.

TEG Sport and Left Field Live, the promoters of the event, hit back with a stinging statement of their own.

But they now have angry fans to contend with. One tweeted in response to the news: “Please refund my 3 Rangers v Celtic game tickets which cost me 240ish dollars.”

Another read: “People like NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres completely misreading the room and underestimating the rivalry probably didn’t help the likelihood of this game happening in Sydney. Anyway, off for a refund!”

And one said: “What about the fans who have bought flights, hotels and tickets for this game?”

Another fumed: “ Rangers fans denying Aussie fns of their club the chance of experiencing a live Old Firm game is really bad. Most of the people objecting cannot even afford to travel to Australia, it would have had zero impact on them.”
