Aussie's dream of ninth world title over in California

Any faint hopes Steph Gilmore had of winning another world title are over after an early US exit. (HANDOUT/World Surf League)

Steph Gilmore can start planning her off-season after the Australian was beaten in the opening round of the World Surf League (WSL) event at Lower Trestles.

The current world No.17 needed to finish the event in California ranked in the top 14 women to compete in Peniche, Portugal and Cloud 9, Philippines, before the Championship Tour (CT) concludes and world champions are decided at December's Pipe Masters in Oahu, Hawaii.
