Aussie WAG Candice Warner recalls being caught up in terrifying drive-by gang shooting

Candice Warner has recalled the scary moment she was caught up in a drive-by shooting when she was in her teens.

The Aussie WAG revealed she was friendly with the infamous surf gang, the Bra Boys in her youth during the 1990s, even calling them "brothers".

She admitted it was "really rough" around Sydney's Maroubra Beach, but she was made to feel "safe".

"It was really rough, but in saying that, I always felt really safe and really protected,' she confessed.

"I grew up with most of the Bra Boys. People see them as this gang, but for me, they were just like brothers. I was always surfing with them.

"I was the ultimate Tom Boy. Touch footy on the beach, just hanging out with them,' she said on the Matty Johns Podcast.

Candice added: "I remember there was this one day. I was doing my training and we were running laps of the beach and 'bang, bang.' You just heard (the shots) and straight away you just knew. Someone has been shot.

"There was a drive-by shooting and one of our friends had just been shot. This is what it was like growing up in Maroubra in the early '90s."

The former professional ironwoman did not specify which members of the gang were caught up in the shooting.

The Bra Boys started in the early 1990s as a beachside band of brothers who came together to surf big waves.

But the Bra Boys from Maroubra, in Sydney's southeast, soon grew a reputation including street violence and other anti-social behaviour.

Members have been charged with murder, armed robbery and smuggling cocaine.

Along the way, the Bra Boys have been the subject of a movie, formed a clothing label and inspired the fictional River Boys in the TV drama series Home And Away.

Two of the Bra Boys' founding members include infamous brothers Jai and Koby Abberton.

Candice first competed in the Ironman series at the age of 14.

She later appeared on reality TV programmes in Australia including the music talent show It Takes Two as well as a celebrity contestant on the Australian version of Hell's Kitchen.

In 2020, Candice participated in SAS Australia: Who Dares Wins.

She married Australian cricketer David Warner in 2015, having had their first child together Ivy Mae in 2014.

They later had a second daughter, Indi Rae in 2016 and a third daughter Isla Rose born in 2019.

Candice previously revealed how her other half struggled to deal with Australia cricket's ball-tampering scandal as he failed to get his thoughts across in his meeting with the press.

"I'm sure there were things he wanted to say but he just couldn't get it out," she added.

"He is hurting. He is seriously, seriously struggling and he's not in a great headspace."

Opening batsman David was banned for 12 months and stripped of the vice-captaincy after he was found to be a key member of the plot to alter the state of the ball during Australia's third Test against South Africa.
