Aussie team's most successful cyclist calls it a day

Giro d'Italia champion Simon Yates, the Englishman who became the best cycling signing ever made by Australia's top professional team Greenedge, has announced his shock retirement from the sport at 33.

Yates joined the outfit then known as Orica-Greenedge back in 2014 with his equally brilliant twin brother Adam and went on to spend 11 successful years with the Australian team that now operates as Jayco AlUla, as he won the 2018 Vuelta a Espana and stages in all three Grand Tours.

Having then left to enjoying one last crack with the Dutch 'super team', Visma-Lease a Bike, in 2025, Yates won the Giro in the most dramatic fashion, making up for his agonising capitulation to Chris Froome when leading the race in 2018.
