Middle-distance star Olli Hoare has equalled his own Australian indoor record with a third-place finish at the prestigious Wanamaker Mile in New York.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a breakout year in 2022, which included becoming the first Australian winner of the Wanamaker Mile - the feature event of the annual Millrose Games.
Later in the year in Brimingham, he joined the legendary Herb Elliott as the only Australian men to win 1500m gold at a Commonwealth Games.
Hoare stopped the clocked at three minutes 50.83 seconds in New York on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) - the same time he ran last year.
But this time it was only good enough for third place in a race won in commanding style by his US training partner Yared Nuguse (3:47.38).
Britain's Neil Gourley was second.
"I'm not disappoinrted or unhappy with a 3:50," said Hoare.
"I'd love to have got under 3:50 but it is February and I want to be firing in September."
The New South Welshman will now jump on a plane and head home for next weekend's world cross country championships in Bathurst where he will be part of a star-studded Australian mixed relay team also including Stewart McSweyn, Jessica Hull and Abbey Caldwell.
"I'll go to Australia, use the energy from this race and hopefully crush it and win a medal at the world cross country champs," said Hoare.
"That's my plan looking forward."
Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Laura Muir from Britain won the women's Wanamaker Mile in 4:20.15.
