Aussie music icon G Flip has traded in the drumsticks for a bunch of fashion accessories by becoming Melbourne Fashion Week’s ambassador for 2024.
From busting out hot tunes to their beautiful marriage to Chrishell Stause and their new bevy release, G Flip has been on a roll following their rise to stardom.
Now, adding to that long long list of achievements, the “GAY 4 ME” singer is taking a dive into all things chic and stylish by becoming the ambassador for Melbourne Fashion Week 2024.
This also makes them the first-ever non-binary ambassador in history which perfectly fits in the festivities theme, “You’re Invited” — which aims to celebrate the “city’s diverse and thriving fashion community”.
Speaking to ABC Entertainment, G Flip unpacked their journey with fashion and how it played a role in their identity.
“My mum recalls me telling her, ‘I don’t want to wear this outfit, I don’t want to wear that outfit’ and I used to choose my own outfits as a stubborn two-year-old and they always tended to be shorts, T-shirts, hats and sunglasses,” they recalled to the publication.
When it came to high school and being a teenager, G Flip admitted they tried to “conform” to the cis-het norm by wearing clothes that didn’t fit their identity.
“As a 12-to-13-year-old, not [wanting] to share with anyone that maybe I thought I was queer. It definitely made me retract and feel a bit uneasy,” they continued.
“All [my friends at school] were wearing dresses and skirts and there was a period when I did that, but I just didn’t feel comfortable at all.”
It wasn’t until high school that G Flip was able to return to what made them feel secure. Their sense of style then evolved after sharing their non-binary identity in 2021 — and of course — when they married Chrishell Stause, who is undoubtedly a style icon in reality TV.
When reflecting on becoming the Melbourne Fashion Week ambassador, G Flip said it was “beautiful and lovely”, adding that clothing is “an extension of who you are as a person”.
“Clothing doesn’t have a gender. You just experiment and try on what makes you feel good. I want to be a reflection of that, and I always want to be an authentic representation of a queer person who’s comfortable in their own skin, living and wearing clothes that makes them feel good,” they shared.
Despite nabbing a spot as ambassador, G Flip refuses to be called a queer fashion icon, saying it would give off “hectic Kanye [West] energy”.
Melbourne Fashion Week kicks off today and will end on October 27 with G Flip performing wrapping up the fashion festivities with an epic performance at Melbourne Town Hall for the closing runway showcase.
