Elvis Smylie has made a spectacular start to the lucrative Abu Dhabi Championship, sinking some monster putts during a flawless opening round to be right in the early mix for the $US1.53 million ($A2.35 million) winner's cheque.

The 23-year-old Smylie, son of former Wimbledon tennis champion Liz Smylie, kicked off his season by winning the Australian PGA last November and has enjoyed a fine year since, currently lying 17th in the tour's Race to Dubai order of merit.
