Audience members evacuated from M&S Bank arena after one song

Audience members were evacuated from the M&S Bank Arena one song into a concert.

Black Stone Cherry and The Darkness played a co-headline show at the arena on Sunday (January 29) night. However, the show was halted after one song so people could be evacuated as a safety precaution.

The ECHO's Cheryl Mullin was in attendance at the concert and said the house lights were turned on one song into the show. A message of "there is an emergency in the building, please leave by the nearest exit" was relayed to those in attendance, while the band's microphones were cut off.

The band put their instruments down before The Darkness' lead singer Justin Hawkins came to the front of the stage and gestured at people to leave. Cheryl said there was no panic and the crowd remained in a good mood, though people were "a bit bewildered" at what had gone on, with some thinking it was part of the show.

The ECHO understands there was a part-evacuation of the arena as a safety precaution. This was resolved swiftly and audience members returned to the auditorium soon after.

There was just over 20 minutes between the alarm sounding and the show restarting. Once back in the arena, Cheryl said the room was smoky and a lighting rig was sprayed with a fire extinguisher.

Once they returned to the stage, The Darkness apologised for the disruption, joking that they had "blown the f****** roof off".

The M&S Bank Arena has been contacted for comment on the full details of the incident.
