Police have launched an attempted murder investigation with a man left fighting for his life in South Shields.
Emergency services were called to Brabourne Street at around 4.13pm on Monday and found a man, aged 54, who had sustained a serious head injury.
He was taken to hospital where he remains in a "critical but stable" condition, Northumbria Police have confirmed. A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

The force confirmed those involved are believed to be known to one another. The street is understood to have been cordoned off at either end overnight and police have remained at the scene on Tuesday.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 4.15pm yesterday (Monday) police received a report of concern for a man on Brabourne Street in South Shields. Emergency services attended the scene and found a man, aged 54, who had sustained a serious head injury.
"He was taken to hospital and remains there in a critical but stable condition. An investigation was launched and a 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
"He remains in police custody at this time. While enquiries are at an early stage, officers believe those involved were known to each other.
"A cordon is in place and an increased police presence remains in the area as officers carry out enquiries."
Meanwhile, those living on their street spoke of their shock to see a number of police cars and two ambulances on the street on Monday afternoon.
One resident, who did not want to be named, told Chronicle Live that she has lived on the street for six years but this is the first time anything like this had happened.
"I just heard the sirens about 4.15pm on Monday and looked out the window and saw two ambulances and quite a few police cars," she said.
"It's quite frightening to think something like this has happened on your doorstep.
"I've lived on the street for six years, and everyone just keeps themselves to themselves."
Another resident, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said: "I have lived on this street 40 odd years and it has changed a lot in that time. At one time I knew everyone who lives here.
"I just saw a few police cars and ambulances in the street. The police were here all night and the street was cordoned off at both ends overnight until lunchtime today."
