Flights cancelled, accommodation closed, or your travel agent has gone bust? These are up there with the biggest nightmares any holidaymaker can face.
After months spent planning and saving for your perfect holiday, the last thing you want is for it to be ruined by delays and cancellations. That is why, if you book a package holiday with a travel agent, you should make sure it’s Atol protected.
Atol is a scheme created by the Civil Aviation Authority to protect customers’ finances. It means that if something goes wrong and their travel agent fails, you won’t lose money or get stranded abroad.

Who gets Atol protection and what does it mean?
Atol protection is offered by authorised travel companies, including travel agents both online and in person, and tour companies. Every UK travel company that sells overseas holidays and flights is required to hold a license in case an operator ceases trading - including airline or hotel.
What does it cover?
An Atol certificate ensures that customers will be looked after in case a company cancels its holidays or leaves them stranded overseas. It can provide full refunds or ensure people are able to finish their holidays confident they will be able to return.
Atol cover means that you are protected if you book a holiday with a single agent or operator that includes flights and accommodation (including cruises); flights and car hire; or flights, accommodation and car hire.
How do I know if my holiday is protected?
Most high-street travel agents offering package holidays will be Atol protected, but ask when you book. Agents are also legally required to provide you with an Atol certificate along with your booking confirmation.
How can I claim if my holiday was affected?
Your Atol certificate, issued by your travel agent, will have all the details you’ll need to claim, including who to contact if you’re abroad when you encounter problems. Be sure to keep all forms of communication and documents needed, such as emails or text messages, just in case they’re needed to help you either get a refund or finish your holiday.
