Atlético Madrid Complete €40M Signing Of Midfielder Conor Gallagher From Chelsea

Atlético Madrid have successfully secured the signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea in a deal valued at approximately €40 million ($44m). The transfer faced uncertainty when Atlético's attempt to bring in forward Samu Omorodion from Chelsea did not materialize.

Gallagher had visited Madrid earlier this month and was present at Atlético's Metropolitano Stadium as the finalization of his signing was underway. However, he had to return to the UK due to the collapse of Omorodion's transfer. Following negotiations, Chelsea reached an agreement to acquire João Félix from Atlético, paving the way for Gallagher's move to be completed.

Sources revealed that the 24-year-old midfielder declined a contract extension from Chelsea, which included a two-year deal with an option for a third season and a substantial salary increase. Gallagher had previously rejected a transfer to Aston Villa and had attracted interest from Tottenham as well.

A product of Chelsea's academy, Gallagher made a mark in the first team following a successful loan spell at Crystal Palace during the 2021-22 season. He boasts 136 appearances in the Premier League, contributing 18 goals and 13 assists.

Atlético Madrid has been active in the transfer market this summer, securing the services of defender Robin Le Normand and forwards Alexander Sorloth and Julián Álvarez in addition to Gallagher.
