Atlanta woman goes on restaurant date. They don’t even make it inside after he asks her to open the door for him: ‘Is this a lavender relationship?’

An Atlanta woman arrives at a restaurant for a first date with a man. However, she quickly calls an Uber after he insists she open the door for him since he’s paying for the meal.

In a video with over 297,000 views, TikToker N’kya (@nkyashanay) recounts the awkward situation from the night before.

“Girl, we didn’t even make it to the restaurant. Well, we did but we didn’t make it inside,” she says.

N’kya explains that her date picked her up and they stopped at the gas station before heading to the restaurant. When they walk up to the door of the convenience store, the man asks her to open the door for him.

“I thought he was trolling so I opened the door,” she says. “I really thought this man was playing with me y’all.”

The pair heads to the restaurant for their date. However, she can’t believe what he does when they approach the building.

“He’s waiting for me to do it again,” she remarks. “Is this a lavender relationship? Tell me now.”

She gives him a confused look, and he asks her, “So, you’re not going to open the door?”

He says, “You want me to sit here and pay for everything, I drove us here…The least you could do is hold the door for me.” He continues to berate her for not opening the door, referring to himself as a “king.”

N’kya decides not to continue with the date and takes an Uber home.

Should women hold the door for men?

It’s traditional etiquette for men to hold the door for women to pass through. However, many women hold the door for whoever is behind them, regardless of gender.

In a post on the r/AskMen subreddit, men share how often women hold the door for them.

“Everyone holds doors for people who are a couple steps behind them. It’s basic human decency. People who don’t are lick bags who can’t get off the goddamn phone for 30 seconds,” one writes.

Another adds, “I’d say women definitely hold the door for me, but it’s noticeably less common than other men holding the door for me. I certainly wouldn’t consider it a rare thing that women do it, just not as common.”

However, the act may be perceived differently in a romantic setting, like a date.

“I hold doors and will carry things because that’s how I was brought up,” a man on r/AskReddit writes.

A woman chimes in, adding, “I love when a man is a gentleman on a date. They don’t need to pay, but when a guy walks around the side of the car and opens the door for me, I think it’s fantastic.”

“As a guy, i’ll do all those things for anyone but i hate it when people hold doors open for me. i realize what theyre doing but i like doing things for my self,” a third commenter says.

Was she right to end the date early?

In the comments, viewers can’t believe how N’kya’s date treated her. They share how they would have reacted to the man’s unusual request.

“I don’t even reach for the door I swear we both would’ve been standing there,” a commenter writes.

Another jokes, “The uber would’ve been called from the gas station.”

“Nah b/c shout out to you for not even entertaining the rest of evening heavy on not collecting red flags,” a third adds.

Some women say they’ve had similar interactions that gave them the “ick.”

“This man called himself a ‘Baddie’ on my phone last night and it wasn’t satire,” a viewer shares.

Others say they hope the situation is “ragebait” for their own sanity.

“For my sanity, this is a skit,” one says.

“I’m just gonna tell myself you trolling us.. cuz AINT NO WAY,” a second adds.

In a follow-up video, N’kya shares text messages from the man after the date, assuming that she wouldn’t “respect” him and open the door because she’s a “democrat.” She writes in the caption, “I don’t even like politics… like I’m so confused rn.”

The Mary Sue reached out to N’kya via Instagram and TikTok direct message for further comment.
