As a result of the ongoing water issues, Atlanta Public Schools have had to cancel summer school and programs for Monday. These activities will resume once the boil water advisories are lifted, as stated by the district. Non-essential employees have been advised to work remotely to mitigate the impact of the water service disruptions.
The problems began last Friday when the city experienced the first of several water main breaks. While repairs have been completed on one break near downtown, another break in Midtown is still being addressed by repair crews. Additionally, a possible break was reported in the Candler Park neighborhood, leading to emergency repairs being carried out swiftly.
The series of water main breaks and ongoing repairs have left parts of Atlanta without water and under boil water advisories. This situation has forced the closure of tourist attractions and the postponement of events, including concerts featuring popular artist Megan Thee Stallion.
Mayor Andre Dickens declared a state of emergency to expedite access to resources for the necessary repairs, acknowledging the challenges faced by residents. The recent water woes in Atlanta shed light on the broader issue of aging infrastructure in the United States.
A study from Utah State University highlighted that water main breaks in the US and Canada cost billions of dollars annually, with many mains being over 50 years old. The average age of failing water mains is approximately 53 years, underscoring the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.
