At Hyde Park seminary, a mural explores ‘all that’s inequitable’ but also aims to reflect joy

One part of a four-sided mural in McCormick Theological Seminary’s lobby titled “Troubled Waters: Exploring the Movement from Mourning to Joy, from Comfort to Discomfort and from Lament to Liberation.” (Robert Herguth / Sun-Times)
A mural in the lobby of Hyde Park’s McCormick Theological Seminary shows a huddled group of featureless Black figures, arms behind their backs, chains around their necks and wrists, poised to walk through a doorway as a fiery sun bears down and piercing blue waves roil in the sea.

The images were inspired by the “Door of No Return” in Ghana, where Africans were brutally corralled and forced onto ships and into slavery in the Americas.
