At 21, an Australian artist bought 25 acres in Tasmania; 18 months later a bushfire...

An Australian artist who used her savings to buy a 25-acre bush block in Tasmania at the age of 21 has built an off-grid home using salvaged materials after a bushfire destroyed her original house just 18 months after she moved in. After losing her first home and having limited money left, she decided not to use a traditional homebuilder. Instead, she spent months collecting discarded timber, metal sheets and old building materials from salvage yards and fire-damaged sites across the island. She used them to build a self-contained cabin for an estimated AU$7,000 to AU$10,000. According to a feature published by alternative housing publication Tiny House Talk, the project shows how using salvaged materials can provide a low-cost way to build a home, especially for young Australians facing high housing costs and increasing environmental risks. The rebuilt home is completely off the electricity and water grids. It uses rooftop solar panels, battery storage and rainwater tanks to meet the owner's basic needs in the remote Tasmanian countryside.
