'Astonishing' Newcastle United defender named in Team of the Week

Garth Crooks has described Dan Burn’s development at Newcastle United as “astonishing” as he named the defender in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Burn started at left-back for the fifth consecutive game as Newcastle produced another statement victory against Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Sunday.

The victory lifted Newcastle into the top four and extended their unbeaten run to seven games (W4, D3). Burn has featured in every league game for Newcastle this term, who boast the best defensive record in the Premier League (10 goals conceded).

Crooks has described the 30-year-old as a dependable figure in a back-line which continues to go from strength to strength.

The former Spurs forward wrote in his weekly column for BBC: “I have become a big fan of Dan Burn since his arrival at St James’ Park. The development in this defender since he left Brighton has been quite astonishing.

“He can play as a full-back, which is quite impressive for such a tall individual, or a centre-half. He was brought to Newcastle by Eddie Howe and has been an ever present since his arrival.

“Against Spurs he was dependable as ever alongside Fabian Schar and Sven Botman in a Newcastle defence that is looking meaner with every game.”

Crooks XI (3-4-3): Henderson; Burn, Mings, Mykolenko; Xhaka, Casemiro, De Bruyne, Tielemans; Ings, Haaland, Awoniyi.
