Aston Villa and Tottenham could be made to regret losing Leeds United transfer battle

Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur could be made to regret losing a summer transfer battle with Leeds United over Sonny Perkins. Leeds were part of a three-way tug of war during the window once it became apparent that Perkins had no intention of signing a new deal at West Ham United.

Both Villa and Spurs were heavily linked with a move for Perkins, and the latter in particular could’ve been hugely tempting. Spurs were the side Perkins supported as a youngster and would’ve enabled him to remain in his comfort zone by staying in London.

However, Perkins opted to take the plunge and move up north, deciding that Leeds was the best club to continue his development. So far, that decision has proven to be the correct one with the 18-year-old having began his career at Leeds in superb form.

Perkins has netted six goals in his opening five matches for Leeds’ U21s side this season and continued that form on the international stage for England U19s. He scored five goals across matches against Georgia, Montenegro and Denmark – including an impressive first-half hat-trick against the former.

That means there is yet to be a game in which Perkins has failed to score in since his summer switch to Elland Road. Perkins is certainly doing all he can to earn a place in Jesse Marsch’s first team, though Sunday’s clash with Villa could come a little too early given Leeds are only Stuart Dallas away from a fully fit squad.
