Aston Villa ace who was 'disappointed' in referees escaped blatant red card against Manchester United

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey appeared to be lucky to avoid a red card after he kicked out at Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez on Thursday night.

The Reds secured a 4-2 victory over the Midlands outfit in the EFL Cup, with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay all getting on the scoresheet for the home side. United's victory saw them progress to the next round of the competition, where they will face off against Burnley at Old Trafford.

Bailey scored against Erik ten Hag's side in Villa's victory over the Reds in the Premier League at the weekend, and the Jamaican was once again causing havoc at Old Trafford on Thursday. However, the 25-year-old was arguably lucky to stay on the pitch after he kicked out at Martinez.

With the opening rounds of the Carabao Cup not using VAR, the former Bayer Leverkusen ace was able to get away with his outburst - not that it bothered Martinez too much.

Ironically, it came after Bailey took to social media to rant about the officials for not spotting what he felt were deliberate elbows on him during the Premier League clash between the two sides at the weekend.

After Villa's victory over the Reds, he wrote on Twitter: "Very disappointed in the referees today, I couldn’t breathe for a second after getting elbowed twice in my rib. The linesman went on to say I shouldn’t be saying anything because I was doing just the same thing to Martinez. Sometimes I don’t understand why we got VAR. SMH (shaking my head)."

United travel to London to face off against Fulham in the league on Sunday in the club's final competitive fixture before the season pauses for the World Cup in Qatar.
