Assassin's Creed Hexe is set to be the next big flagship entry in Ubisoft's stealthy series.
Set to take place during a a "pivotal moment in history", it seems like we're set to see a witchy entry arrive. With lots of ideas circulating about where the upcoming Assassin's Creed game will be set, and if it could be during one of the infamous witch trials, it promises to be a darker, narrative-driven experience.
We can hardly wait to get our first look at Hexe, but new creative director, Jean Guesdon has said we can expect the studio to go quiet for some time as the team works on the new game. At least with Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced setting sail this July, we'll have Kenway to keep us busy. But if you're eager to learn more about Assassin's Creed Hexe, read on as we breakdown all of the latest news and details.
What is Assassin's Creed Hexe?
At the time of reveal, Assassin's Creed Hexe was described by ex-franchise director Marc-Alexis Cote as a "new flagship title" in the series, one which will be "a very different type of Assassin's Creed game."
In an official blog post titled Assassin's Creed: Into 2026, Jean Guesdon, head of content, gave an update on Assassin's Creed Hexe, saying we can expect a "unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin's Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history."
That much is evident from the tone of the initial reveal, which opens with ominous music and dead leaves floating from rotting trees – a far cry from the bombast that has been typically associated with Assassin's Creed reveal trailers in the past. If this first look is anything to go by, Assassin's Creed Hexe really does look set to bring us a "darker" experience.
Assassin's Creed Hexe trailer
It may only be 30 seconds long, but the Assassin's Creed Hexe trailer has got the gears of our brains turning. It's an effective mood piece, which concludes with an Assassin's Insignia – formed from broken branches – hanging from a tree, twirling above an open flame.
It's haunting imagery that leaves a lot to the imagination, so perhaps it's no surprise that Marc-Alexis Cote said that he "can't wait for our fans to tear apart that trailer and find out all its secrets."
Assassin's Creed Hexe setting
While Ubisoft is yet to officially confirm the Assassin's Creed Hexe setting, an uncorroborated rumor from Bloomberg has suggested that the game will be a witchy RPG set in Central Europe during the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire, while a newer leak suggests that the setting will be that of Wurzberg, Germany, instead. Either of these would certainly count as "pivotal moment[s] in history", as Ubisoft teased, where mass hysteria gripped the continent as 80,000 people were executed for the crime of being in league with the devil - allegedly.
Hearsay, fear, and spectral evidence were driving forces behind the devastating 16th-century witch trials, and it could make for a truly fascinating setting for an Assassin's Creed game. Unsurprisingly, longtime Assassin's Creed fans are already excited by the Witch Trials concept.
With theories ranging from a Salem, Massachusetts setting to one set during the European witch trials in Germany, one thing's for sure: the people want their witchy Creed, and they want it now!
Assassin's Creed Hexe development
Assassin's Creed Hexe is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the "veteran team behind Assassin's Creed Valhalla." Ubisoft Montreal is the studio responsible for bringing the Assassin's Creed franchise to life in 2007, so it's no surprise that it'll be the driving force behind its future.
Clint Hocking who lead production on some of Ubisoft's most technically ambitious games, including Far Cry 2 and Watch Dogs Legion, was originally on board the project as creative director, before his departure from Ubisoft in February 2026. A few months later, Hocking formed a new indie studio. Now, Guesdon has taken up the creative director mantle alongside his duties as head of content at Ubisoft.
"While we know we haven't shared much about this one yet," Guesdon said in an official Ubisoft blog post in 2026, "it's being built with great care by our veteran team here at Ubisoft Montreal."
Revealed at the start of 2026, thanks to a spot from ClawsomeGamer, Benoit Richer's LinkedIn profile revealed that he was working as the director on the upcoming game. Richer was the director of Batman: Arkham Origins and a game director on Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Fast forward to April 2026, and news revealed Richer also parted ways with Ubisoft to work at indie studio, Servo Games.
It was also confirmed that Hexe will likely be the next title added to The Animus Hub since the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows.
In a presentation attended by the GamesRadar+ team in 2025, Ubisoft producer Andrée-Anne Boisvert explained that Ubisoft "will also be integrating The Animus Hub in its constantly evolving form into all our future titles going forward. These could include, of course, upcoming flagship titles like the previously announced Assassin's Creed: Codename Hexe, upcoming multiplayer titles like Assassin's Creed: Codename Invictus, and new additions and new titles that have not been officially announced yet."
Assassin's Creed Hexe release date speculation
There is no confirmed Assassin's Creed Hexe release date, though recent speculation posits a potential launch between 2027-2029.
The news came in the publisher's FY 2025/2026 earnings call, which suggested that it expects to deliver more from its "premium games" (including Assassin's Creed) in the next three years, following a two-year period of focusing resources on its in-house restructuring amid a "softer release schedule".
It'll likely be some time yet before we see Assassin's Creed Hexe arrive too. In the latest update from Ubisoft, Guesdon said: "We are taking the time to deliver on its ambitious vision, which means we’ll be quiet for a while longer, but we love seeing all the enthusiasm happening on our channels and can’t wait to unveil more when the time is right."
