Artwork showing Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, with protagonist Edward Kenway looking out from the side of ship.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is the official title for the long-rumored Black Flag remake, and it's set to release this July.

Yes, after much speculation and some leaks, we got our first official look at the upcoming return of pirate Edward Kenway's swashbuckling adventure. Alongside confirming Black Flag will be sailing on to PC and consoles this July, we also got to see how the upcoming Assassin's Creed game has been rebuilt on Ubisoft's latest Anvil engine. With a host of improvements - including a change I'm personally very happy about - we got a gameplay overview, and a trailer.

After finally confirming a remake of the 2013 game in an Assassin's Creed: Into 2026 blog post in back March, we now have a better idea of what's in store. With plenty to unpack from the reveal, I've gathered together everything you need to know about Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, from the changes to the story, and more. So, read on to find out more.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced will release on July 9, 2026.

This launch date comes after the existence of Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced was officially confirmed back in March 2026, with Ubisoft's post on the Assassin's Creed website teasing a future update. That means we have a few months to wait before we raise up our pirate flag once more.

Initial rumors suggested that the remake was in the "earliest stages of development" back in 2023, with a report from Kotaku alleging it would "not be complete for at least a few years", which seems to hold true to the current timeline of the release.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced will release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S at launch.

Ubisoft confirmed Black Flag Resynced's platforms in an official press release following the first proper reveal of the upcoming remake, which gave us our first look at Edward Kenway's return.

While it seems the Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake won't be among the lineup upcoming Switch 2 games this July, we do wonder if might might sail onto the Switch 2 someday. After all, the sprawling open-world of Assassin's Creed Shadows landed on Nintendo's latest console some months after the RPGs initial release, so maybe Black Flag will follow suit. We'll be keeping a close eye out for further updates.

We've officially gotten our first look at Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's gameplay, with Ubisoft detailing some of the major changes and improvements that will be introduced in the remake.

Entirely rebuilt on the Anvil engine, you can expect to step into the stealthy pirate adventure with enhanced visuals and lighting, a new dynamic weather system, and most excitingly, "seamless access to cities and locations". Yes, that means there will be no loading screens as you enter major cities in the remake.

Combat has been reworked to be more action-orientated, too. While you can still expect to be kitted out with swords, flintlock pistols, and the signature hidden blade, you can now perform reactive parries that open up enemies for chained take-downs. You can also use the environment to your advantage, making use of breakable items, ledges, and more to take out your enemies.

Smoke bombs are also returning to cloak your presence and stun enemies, along with Kenway's blowpipe to silently knock out foes with darts, and a grappling hook to pull and hang up opponents.

Stealth has also been improvement, meaning you can now crouch freely at any time as Kenway. Learning from the likes of some of the more recent entries in the series, Black Flag Resynced is also making parkour more fluid, with team setting out to retain Kenway's signature moves while delivering tighter controls and free-jumping.

Eavesdropping and tailing missions have also been revamped. Instead of being instantly desyncronized upon detection like you would in the original, the "action will continue" even if you're spotted, and you'll have to adapt your approach accordingly.

With more entries in the series factoring in ships as a core part of exploration – such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla – Resynced will also see some enhancements to the Jackdaw, with additional upgrades and the possibility to have a monkey or cat as pet on board.

The open-world adventure has long been considered one of the best Assassin's Creed games in the stealthy series thanks to its scope, protagonist and ultimate pirate fantasy fulfilment. And the shiny remake looks set to keep this very much alive while adding a host of refinements to take the adventure across the high seas into the new-gen era. If you're keen to reflect back on the gameplay of the original, you can check out our Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag review.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced story

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is set in the Golden Age of pirates in the Assassin's Creed timeline, with Black Flag's story kicking off in 1715. Following one of the best Assassin's Creed protagonists in Edward Kenway, a young ship captain, you meet and ally with a host of memorable pirate figures plucked from history and legend – including the likes of Calico Jack, Blackbeard, and Anne Bonny.

As you set out after the central villain, Woodes Rogers, you take command of your own ship and recruit your crew as you make waves across the Caribbean setting.

Excitingly, the remake is set to see new story content introduced, with fresh narrative arcs for characters such as Blackbeard and Stede, and we can also expect to see a new scene with Kenway's wife Caroline. Three new recruitable officers for the Jackdaw will also bring with them their own storylines to explore as you try to gain their trust.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is not an RPG

During the initial reveal of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, game director Richard Knight made it clear that the remake will "remain a solo adventure and character driven experience", before adding "it is not an RPG".

With lots of Assassin's Creed games veering into RPG territory in recent years, it sounds like Ubisoft is striving to retain the classic experience of Kenway's adventure, rather than follow the lead of newer RPG-leaning entries.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Remake leaks and rumors

The Assassin's Creed Black Flag Remake leaks and rumors began to really pick up back in summer 2023, with anonymous sources reportedly revealing to Kotaku that the remake was in early development. The following year, in 2024, Ubisoft confirmed some remakes of "older Assassin's Creed games" were coming, but still hadn't confirmed the suspicion surrounding Black Flag.

Then, speculation reached a fever pitch in 2025, when a series of supposed leaks seemingly surfaced that kept the rumor mill about the Remake alive and well. With hints from the like of a statue maker to Edward Kenway's voice actor, we also saw an age rating on the official PEGI website for "Black Flag Resynced" before the title was later confirmed. Towards the end of 2025, Steam updates then seemingly pointed to Ubisoft readying up for something Black Flag-shaped.

Many were hopeful that the Black Flag remake would get a big reveal during the Game Awards 2025 showcase, but after it didn't surface, rumors and speculation continued at the start of 2026 as fans began to wonder when it would actually get announced in light of the website domain name. With the likes of Black Flag's soundtrack getting uploaded to Ubisoft's YouTube account only adding more wind in the sails, we at last got confirmation that it is, in fact, on the way in March 2026.

Ahead of its unveiling in April 2026, a lot of leaks also began to circulating ahead of the showcase.

Who's making Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced?

The first official reveal of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced confirmed the team at Ubisoft Singapore is leading the development of the remake after much speculation.

The studio worked on the original Black Flag on some of the naval ship sailing elements alongside lead developer, Ubisoft Montreal. Most recently, the Singapore studio released the sea-faring adventure Skull and Bones in 2024, which infamously had a very lengthy development after actually beginning life as a Black Flag expansion all the way back in 2013.

Paul Fu, who has past experience working on Black Flag, is serving as creative director. We also saw an appearance from head of content, Jean Guesdon, who was the original creative director of the 2013 release.
