"Assassin's Creed Black Flag is the best pirate game of all time" according to Windrose devs, so of course they "took inspiration" from it for their viral open-world seafaring game

The developers of Windrose have cited Assassin's Creed: Black Flag as the best pirate game ever made ahead of the early access launch of its own survival game.

Speaking to Automaton in a new interview, the Windrose producer known mononymously as Phil (or Yar_master) was asked why the team wanted to create a pirate game, and if there were any piracy adventures that inspired it.

Phil explains: "It's a combination of what we wanted to create and what we thought the players would want to play. We indeed love the pirate theme, and believe this niche is still underserved today." The dev adds: "At the same time, we love survival games. We took inspiration from many great games like Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Valheim, Enshrouded and others to create our own PvE pirate game with survival at its core, but with a strong focus on adventure and exploration."

As for pirate-specific games that the team loves, Phil admits that "with a team of 60, it's not easy to give an answer on behalf of the whole team," but adds: "The universal consensus in the team, I believe, is that Assassin's Creed Black Flag is the best pirate game of all time."

Windrose will enter early access on April 14 as announced during the Triple-i showcase last night, with the co-op survival adventure set to launch with three biomes. Although ironically, it may end up competing with what the team dubs the greatest pirate game ever made as its remake, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, is rumored to be announced a couple days later on April 16.

With that said, Windrose definitely has the potential to be a popular one – with over 1.5 million Steam wishlists making it the eight most-wishlisted game on the storefront right now, so we'll just have to see how it goes down.

I can't stop playing the demo for this pirate game with Black Flag sailing, Sea of Thieves combat, and Ark crafting.
