GUWAHATI: Abandoned by his father and raised by his mother who runs a tea stall, a boy from Patacharkuchi in Assam’s Bajali district seat has secured a seat in undergraduate course at AIIMS, New Delhi, this year by cracking NEET in his first attempt.
Rahul Das, who gave up his job as an engineer to chase his dream to become a doctor, has proved that perseverance pays off. “I owe it to my mother. I can never repay her back for all the sacrifices she has made to raise me and my brother with the earnings from selling tea. Our father left our home and stopped taking care of us 11 years ago,” Rahul said.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government will take care of Rahul’s educational expenses. Rahul passed his Class XII exam in 2015 with high grades but had to drop a year because of extreme poverty at home.
“It was impossible to think of higher studies after my Class XII because of our financial condition. After one year, I got admission at Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology at Changsari (Guwahati) and then I got a job in an MNC. But there was no job satisfaction and then I realised I have one life and so why not chase my dream that I have been nurturing since my Class 12 to become a doctor. Finally, I decided to chase my dream and one fine day I resigned from my job and started preparing for NEET,” Rahul said.
