Ashish Mishra surrenders week after SC order; sent back to jail

BAREILLY: Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni's son, Ashish Mishra, surrendered in a local court on Sunday following a Supreme Court order last week, which cancelled the bail granted to him by a Lucknow high court (HC) bench.

The apex court had given him a week's time to surrender. Ashish, who has been accused of running over four farmers and a journalist with his convoy during the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 last year, has been sent back to the Kheri jail.

"He decided to surrender a day before the week-long time limit set by the SC," Ashish's counsel Awadesh Kumar Singh said. The next date of hearing of the matter in the Kheri lower court is on Tuesday. Senior prosecution officer SP Yadav told TOI, "Ashish Mishra surrendered in the court of remand magistrate Chinta Ram and was remanded to the Lakhimpur Kheri district jail under judicial custody."
