Nottinghamshire Tory MP Lee Anderson has attracted criticism on social media over comments he made about public sector workers. Mr Anderson spoke in a Commons debate today (January 10) amid ongoing strike action by workers, including NHS staff.
Mr Anderson, who represents Ashfield, said: "Now then, I think it's important to remember that public sector workers are employed by and paid for by the great British taxpayer. And while I sympathise with some of their demands, does my right honourable friend agree with me that their first loyalty should be with the British taxpayer - and not some power-crazed union barons who fund the Labour party and have in the past paid off Labour MPs' mortgages?"
A clip of Mr Anderson's comments was tweeted by PoliticsJOE and many people were critical of what he said. In response, @frankotron said: "Lee Anderson is also employed by the taxpayer. Why does he hate taxpaying NHS workers so much?"

@swans_dan commented: "On the flip side, may I remind Lee Anderson that he is also employed and that he is paid for by the taxpayer. His loyalties along with the rest of this Government are not on the side of the taxpayer!"
@chrispm87 said: "He forgets those very same taxpayers have more loyalty and respect for those in the NHS than they do their own MPs. He also has his salary paid for by taxpayers, or has he forgotten that too?"
@57timj replied: "30p Lee, gets a nice salary, substantial expenses, subsidised luxury food and drink - all paid for by taxpayers, many of whom are now striking for decent pay and conditions."
