Ash Ketchum has finally won the Pokemon World Championship after 25 years of trying

He's finally done it. Ash Ketchum has become a Pokemon World Champion after 25 years of trying. The lead character of the popular anime series was crowned the champ in the latest episode of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series.

Fans of the show were delighted for Ash with a tweet from the official Pokemon Twitter account congratulating him receiving over 400,000 likes. While others comically quipped about how long it has taken him to finally achieve the title.

The anime which originally aired back in 1997 and has over 1,200 episodes, follows perpetual 10-year-old Ash on his quest to become a Pokemon Master with his iconic electric mouse creature called Pikachu. Pokemon, which originally started as a video game sees trainers catch mythical creatures known as pocket monsters and battle them against each other at major tournaments.

Previous seasons of the show follow Ash across various fictional regions catching Pokemon as he aimed to win eight gym badges to qualify for their Pokemon League. However, this latest series saw Ash travel the globe in a bid to become world champion.

Ash came up against former world champion Leon and their battle lasted four episodes. An emotional series it saw the return of fan favourites, Brock, Misty and Dawn who are Ash's friends from previous seasons who have since retired.
