A local supermarket worker has been commended for her outstanding work for her community.
Asda Toryglen community colleague Elizabeth Arbuckle was nominated in the upcoming Scottish Women’s Awards 2022 under the ‘Community Work of the Year’ category, for her dedication and services to the Toryglen area.
The Scottish Women’s Awards celebrate and recognise the very best of Scottish female talent, providing influential and hardworking women with a platform to be appreciated.
The awards celebrate entrepreneurs, professionals, businesses, civil servants and sports stars on their success and contribution to society.
Elizabeth is a familiar face within the Toryglen community and was nominated by a member of the public for her passion and dedication to supporting various initiatives, particularly through her work at Asda.
She started her career at Asda Toryglen in the bakery department nearly 25 years ago when the store first opened. And she has since volunteered as part of Asda’s ‘Get Involved’ programme which sparked her passion for working in the community.
As an avid supporter of a wide range of local groups, schools, charities and good causes, Elizabeth’s role involves helping these groups continue to thrive.
Elizabeth would help groups apply for grants for the Asda Foundation and secure nominations for Asda’s Green Tokens Giving Scheme.
She would also spend time volunteering or inviting groups to the Toryglen store to raise funds and awareness for various causes.
After 23 years of working in the community, Elizabeth is delighted to be nominated for the ‘Community Work of the Year’ award.
She said: “I am so pleased to be nominated for a Scottish Women’s Award. I can’t believe someone has taken the time to nominate myself and the store – I am stunned!
“My job is like no other, I work 22 hours a week in the community, and I am given the freedom and autonomy to help local groups in so many different ways.
“This is such a great opportunity to showcase the amazing work that Community Champions across the Asda family do, and I am really proud to be part of that.”
One of Elizabeth’s fondest memories is when she worked on a project with Orchard Grove Kindergarten.
She said: “I found out Orchard Grove Kindergarten was moving to new premises, and I wanted to make sure they had the funds to get up and running again. I helped them source paint, and I also stepped in and helped paint the new building and fences.
“Another good memory is when I was nominated for an Evening Times Street Ahead Award in 2014. We got to attend the ceremony and reflect on all of our hard work in the community.
"There’s been lots of happy memories and I’ve really enjoyed my time at Asda Toryglen.”

“Elizabeth is so positive and is always optimistic about the impact our community initiatives have. She is also a great mentor and support for other community colleagues.
