Asda to stock budget smart price products in all supermarkets for the first time

Asda has announced it will nearly double the amount of stores which offer shoppers lower priced products by rolling out their Smart Price range to every store in the UK.

The supermarket chain currently only stocks 150 Smart Price and Farm Stores products in 300 stores, which provides shoppers with prices as low as 28p for a 200g tin of chopped tomatoes and 29p for 500g pasta.

But from Tuesday, March 1, shoppers will be able to find lower prices as the supermarket will roll-out the full 200 products into their 581 stores across the country.

It comes as families across the country are grappling with higher costs due to the cost of living crisis that has included rising costs on energy bills and products in supermarkets.

The move follows criticism from food writer and anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe who raised concerns about the price increases that low-income families were being faced with recently.

In a series of tweets the campaigner pointed out that not many of the supermarket's budget priced range were available in-stores or online for shoppers.

For example, she mentioned that her local Asda was not stocking a 29p bag of pasta from their Smart Price Range but had a 70p own-brand version on shelves.

Since the issues were raised, Asda has pledged to make sure shoppers will be able to access lower priced products both in stores and online.

The supermarket has said that steps are being taken to make its value ranges more accessible by increasing the number of products available online.

The supermarket has added 100 Smart Price and Farm Stores products to its website this week, increasing the total online range to 187 products, and this will rise to 200 by the end of February.

Meg Farren, Asda’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “We want to help our customers’ budgets stretch further and have taken on board the comments about the availability of our Smart Price range made by Jack Monroe.

We are taking steps to put our full Smart Price and Farm Stores ranges in store and online to make these products as accessible as possible.”
